Pennyburn Footbridge

Pennyburn Footbridge
Project:
Pennyburn Footbridge
Short Description:
Pennyburn Bridge is an important element in the NorthWest Greenway Network (NWGN). The Culmore Greenway section of NWGN comprises 10 km of greenway from Pennyburn Bridge to Culmore Country Park, Derry. It links Derry City with residential areas, schools, businesses, local amenities and the popular Culmore Country Park. The footbridge spans 63 metres over water and gives users a direct route on the Quay Trail alongside the river. This avoids the previous need for users to divert onto the busy Bay Road for that section of the route. There were several challenging elements to this project for ourselves. It was planned at an early stage to fabricate the bridge in eight large sections (five deck sections and three ‘roof’ sections). Each section was fully welded with bolted end connections for site assembly. These connections were hidden from view when erection was complete.
